Designer Francesca Marotta Offers Insight Into Fall 2015 Collection

Francesca Marotta, who has shown at both London Fashion Week and New York Fashion Week and has been featured in Vogue Italia and British Vogue, offered us an inside look into her newest collection for fall 2015, "Veni Vidi Vici."

1. What was your inspiration for your fall 2015 collection, "Veni Vidi Vici"?

"This collection - 'Veni Vidi Vici' - is inspired by Los Angeles and my experience with the city during the summer months of 2014. My time in L.A. was life changing, as I was enriched both personally and professionally, and I would not trade my visit for the world! While modern day L.A. served as an inspiration, the collection also has a hint of Old Hollywood."

"Growing up, I was inspired by great artists and designers, such as Fred Astaire, Hitchcock and Marlene Dietrich, whom put stars in my eyes and motivated me to become a fashion designer. It felt natural for me to make a collection inspired by Hollywood's Golden Era of Costume Designers."

"This touches on my childhood dream of designing costumes for enormous casts in Hollywood. This collection is very wearable and will seamlessly take a woman from daytime to evening."

2. Your time in L.A. seems to have impacted you quite a bit as a designer. What else can you share with us about your time in the City of Angels?

"As this collection is based on Hollywood, the way L.A. inspired me was phenomenal. I love the way the City is built, its architecture in DTLA [Downtown Los Angeles] is very unique. I love the old cinemas' lights. The [Hollywood] Walk of Fame was a must see. Looking at the stars and remembering the films I watched as a child just fed my brain with ideas. The Hollywood sign too! The city is very magical."

3. You've spent some time in L.A., as you shared, but London is your base. How has London inspired your designs?

"London is undoubtedly one of the world's largest and most important fashion hubs. Londoners are more expressive and daring in personal fashion choices, compared to cities such as Paris, Milan or Los Angeles!"

"Londoners have a different relationship with clothes and fashion. London, itself, is extremely inspiring; its sense of humor, cosmopolitanism, architecture, street fashion and history make it a one-of-a-kind city!"

4. Back to your fall 2015 collection. The fabrics used in this collection caught our eye. What's your favorite fabric to work with?

"On this collection, my favorite fabric to work with has been the 'hairy' one. I love the way it catches the light!"

"The way the fabrics connect to the collection is very simple - I wanted to show both sides of the woman, strong and soft. The 'hairy' fabric represents the strength; it is edgy, fun, sexy, powerful and very feminine at the same time."

"The other fabrics are more delicate, soft, draping, fluid - a different femininity."

"In general, I like working with wool, silk and lace."

"I have a love-love relationship with fabrics; I love their smells, I always touch them - eyes shut - and if I get emotions, I must work with it!"

4. You have shown your collections around the globe. How do you feel this speaks to your strengths as a designer?

"Showcasing around the world has given me the opportunity to travel, experience new cities and find inspiration globally and in the friends I have made along the way."

"Travelling is the best way to enrich a human being. As a designer, travel has allowed me a glimpse into the global fashion industry and how home designers in numerous countries work. It has also given me the invaluable experience of growing my brand by expanding reach to press, stylists and buyers at international levels."
